Guardianship Offers Family-Like Care

Westchester Arc has been Murray H.'s legal guardian for the last 20 years. And in that time, he has formed a family-like relationship with his guardianship advocate, Sandra Rosario. Sandra's always there for Murray, whether he needs advice or just wants to talk.

They share special lunches and celebrate his birthday together. "Murray takes comfort in having someone there for him who's like family," says Sandra. "And I take comfort in being there for him." Knowing that Murray loves sight-seeing, Sandra encouraged him to get involved with Westchester Arc's Club Echo, a travel program for individuals with developmental disabilities.

As a result, Murray has enjoyed trips to Cape Cod, New York City and the Jersey Shore. Murray is also a lover of music. Every year at the guardianship holiday party, he performs Love Letters, by Perry Como. "I'm usually the one cheering the loudest," says Sandra. "Watching Murray do something he loves makes me really happy."
