Over 100 people attended the fifth annual transition fair held recently at White Plains High School. The event, co-sponsored by Westchester Arc and several other community organizations, helped high schoolers with developmental disabilities and their families identify post-secondary options relating to employment, housing and day programs.
“It is recommended that families start planning when a student turns 15,” notes Ralph Szur, director of Westchester Arc’s Life Planning Center. “This fair connected families with public organizations, community resources and transition-planning professionals—arming them with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their children’s future.”
Families arrived with questions ranging from where to find jobs to how to decide if their child is ready to move into a group home. Westchester Arc representatives were on hand to answer questions about guardianship, life planning and recreation services.

“There are many options I didn’t even know about,” remarked one parent. “I feel much better knowing my child has choices.”
