Paul—a participant of Westchester Arc’s supported employment program—celebrated his 20th year working for Fujifilm U.S.A. Paul started working in the company’s corporate offices, located in Valhalla, in the summer of 1988 as a mailroom assistant. Though the company had a high volume of mail, and he was often very busy, Paul was happy to help wherever he could. He quickly learned how to sort letters and deliver and pick-up packages in a timely fashion.

As part of the transition process, a Westchester Arc job coach visited Paul on a regular basis to teach him about employer expectations and office etiquette, and to ensure that he was performing to the best of the abilities.

“Paul needed little guidance,” recalls Peggy Mead, job placement specialist. “We only visit him twice a month now. Though Paul is very independent, he takes comfort in having a Westchester Arc staff member to rely on, should he need us.” Should he need more support, I visit him more than twice a month.”

Paul’s strong work ethic and desire to be a team player quickly led to more job responsibilities. He currently receives and stocks supplies for six pantries, sets up conference room furniture, and manages the copy paper stock—while still continuing his daily mail routine.

Many co-workers were eager to share in Paul's special day.

A model employee, Paul has also mentored an intern with disabilities for the past two summers. He brings the individual on his morning rounds and guides him through his daily job duties. Serving as a mentor has brought Paul a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

“Fujifilm U.S.A. appreciates Paul’s commitment to his job and his pride in his work. Paul is always on time and is rarely out sick. He is a valued member of Support Services, and we are extremely proud to have him on our team,” comments Erin Blessing, regional facilities manager.

“I am very happy to work here,” adds Paul. “Thank you to Fujifilm and Westchester Arc.”

Westchester Arc’s supported employment works with over 300 companies and civic organizations to find meaningful community career opportunities consistent with an individual’s skills and desires. Last year the agency found jobs for over 70 people, ranging from major corporations—such as Applebees, Old Navy and Starbucks—to local shops, restaurants and corporate offices.
