| Craig Y. enjoys visiting with Justine and JoJo. |
Driven by her love for animals and a desire to reach out to patients served by Westchester Arc’s clinic, Justine Pagano, clinical social worker, recently initiated a pet therapy program for individuals with developmental disabilities at the agency’s Sheib Center in Yonkers.
“It seemed like a natural fit. JoJo fills my life with happiness. Even if I’m having the worst day, she’ll make me smile. I wanted to share that with others,” explains Justine.
“Studies show that interacting with a pet, especially a dog, can help lower blood pressure and decrease stress. Plus, JoJo was trained as a guide dog, so she has a natural way with people and is very in tune with their emotions.”
Since entering the scene last spring, JoJo has wagged her way into the hearts of many. Through one-on-one sessions, participants have established a natural bond with her—one that elevates their mood and encourages socialization. Individuals who were once hesitant to discuss their feelings, are now willing to talk about their hopes, fears and concerns with less distress.
“One individual with limited verbal skills asks questions about JoJo and eagerly waits for her weekly pet therapy visit,” continues Justine. “Another individual, who was always anxious and showed signs of depression, is much calmer and more upbeat.”
After the success of one-on-one sessions, Justine introduced JoJo to individuals in the adult day services program. Weekly meetings teach attendees how to care for a pet, while providing an outlet to share experiences with peers and express emotions. Future plans call for classes covering basic pet grooming and obedience training.
“Our consumers share so much of themselves with us, especially within the therapy relationship. Bringing JoJo allows them to see that I am willing to share, giving them a sense that I am human just like them,” continues Justine. “That has enhanced our therapeutic bond and provided me with a more effective means to help them.”

After a long day at the office, JoJo relaxes at home.
