Ten Westchester Arc consumers were recognized for their workplace achievements. Pictured from left are Alfred H., who works for the agency's micrographics department; Gail Osbourne, job coach, and Nicola Walters, vocational habilitation specialist.
County Executive Andrew Spano honored 148 workers with disabilities— including nine individuals from Westchester Arc—at the 2007 Westchester Annual Achievement Awards, held October 9 at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, New York.
The event, sponsored by The Westchester Employment Network, Westchester County Office for the Disabled, Doral Arrowwood and Diana Gould Ltd., celebrated the workplace contributions of people with disabilities and paid tribute to the employers who believe in them. Over 100 businesses and civic organizations were cited—an all-time high in Westchester County.
Brian M., recipient of the Career Longevity Award, was nominated for the great personal strides he has made in learning to work within the community. He was hired by Grand Union in Croton in 2000, and when that store closed, he took the skills he had learned there to A&P, also in Croton. A dedicated worker, Brian assists with all aspects of store maintenance, including the training of new maintenance employees. He organizes shopping carts, unloads delivery trucks, removes trash and mops the floors.
Marcus H. was recognized for providing vital office support at law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP in Armonk, while Joseph H. was honored for his maintenance work at Greenburgh Town Hall.
Richard T. and Alfred H. were cited for their contributions to Westchester Arc. Richard sorts cans at Westchester Arc’s Mount Kisco recycling center in addition to working four days a week at the ShopRite in Croton. Alfred scans documents in the micrographics department in White Plains.
MaryAnn R. was honored for her work at Club Fit in Briarcliff, where she helps maintain the locker room. Vicki U., Ray R. and Ken S., respectively, were recognized for their roles in the retail market. Vicki cleans the checkout areas at Toys “R” Us in Mount Kisco; Ray bags groceries at the Food Emporium in Ossining, and Ken straightens shelves at CVS in Croton.
