Barbara Powell, senior social worker, and Mary Ann Shelton, family outreach coordinator, organize supplies for distribution.
Westchester Arc’s board of directors and cabinet members contributed $800 to the agency’s community services to provide children and young adults with much needed school supplies. In kind donations were also received.
Over 50 students involved with the agency’s crisis intervention and community outreach programs received a book bag filled with notebooks, rulers, pens and other essential items. Elementary school children were given Dora the Explorer and Spiderman backpacks, crayons and drawing paper. Middle and high school students were presented with messenger bags, binders and three-subject notebooks.

“School supplies have gotten expensive, making it difficult for our families to purchase them,” notes Barbara Powell, senior social worker. “The last thing we want is to see students fall behind because they are not prepared. Thankfully, that won’t happen this year.”

During a recent parenting skills meeting in Yonkers, Barbara presented the supplies to
15 families. “This will make all the difference. Thank you,” said one mom.
The donations are particularly important to teenagers in middle and high school. “Teenagers want what’s popular,” says Mary Ann Shelton, family outreach coordinator. “Having the same
type of messenger bag or notebook as their
friends will help students build self-confidence
and feel like part of the class, which will help improve studies.”
“We are very thankful to all of the board
members and cabinet members who contributed
to the drive,” comments Nancy Succoso, assistant executive director. “Their generosity will help students achieve their true potential.”
