Spending time away from a child isn’t easy, especially when he or she has developmental disabilities. Knowing your son or daughter is left with caring, dedicated professionals in a safe, friendly environment can be comforting.
Respite offers parents or care givers an opportunity to take some time off from caring for their family member with a disability. These services can be used for visiting, errands, trips, or simply for a needed break.
Our freestanding Respite House provides planned overnight visits for both children and adults at our newly redecorated home in Thornwood, NY. Up to four individuals can be served daily. Additionally, we have one bed available for an individual in crisis. This program is designed to give a well-deserved break to parents who care for a person with disabilities at home. Respite is provided 7 days per week. Individuals who attend respite on weekdays must be in a day program. During the weekend, respite is provided on a 24-hour basis. Respite staff are trained in first aid, CPR, behavior management, interdisciplinary team approach, adaptive equipment and fire safety. Recreational and social events are planned by staff based on consumer interests, needs and capabilities. Fees are based on a sliding scale which allows us to provide respite to all families, regardless of financial limitations.
This program is a family-support program. We offer activities for individuals who live with their families, both for recreational purposes and for the purpose of providing respite to the families for part of a day. The Reunion Club meets three times a month, for approximately five hours at a time. The participants enjoy getting together with friends and also have the opportunity to increase community integration skills. Activities are chosen according to the interests of the participants, and we also try to provide new experiences for them. Most activities will meet at 121 Westmoreland Avenue, White Plains. Each individual pays a fee of $5 (Certain trips may be slightly higher.) Some favorite activities include: dinner and dancing at the Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown, bowling, movies, trips to New York City and much more.
