Psychotherapy in the clinic is comprised of therapeutic approaches that provide an outlet for individuals to discuss problems and concerns with a trained therapist in a private, personalized session. Psychotherapy, or counseling, has helped individuals keep jobs, establish more effective personal relationships and in learn adaptive skills.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the assumption that behavior is affected by one’s thoughts and feelings. The aim is to change behavior by focusing on one’s thoughts, assumptions and beliefs. With this therapy, individuals learn to recognize irrational and unconstructive thinking patterns that can trigger intense feelings and influence one’s behavior. CBT makes use of behavioral techniques such as relaxation and breathing exercises, while changing the irrational thinking. CBT has been used in the treatment of anxiety, phobia, panic disorders, depression and obsessive compulsive disorders.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science that studies the relationship between the individual’s behavior and his/her environment. It uses systematic procedures to design and implement changes in the environment to produce a socially significant change in behavior.
ABA uses direct observation, measurement and functional analysis of the behavior and its environment. The target behavior is assessed by looking into antecedent stimuli (what comes right before the behavior occurs) and the consequences of the behavior (what happens right after the behavior is displayed). Behavioral change results from modifying antecedents and/or consequences.
ABA has been very effective in treating individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. Therapists are highly trained and supervised by board certified behavior analysts.
Creative therapy, or expressive therapy, assists individuals in exploring issues and difficulties in life. Expressive therapy assumes that healing can be facilitated through the use of imagination and various forms of creative expression, including art, dance, drama, music, play, humor and writing. The approach is based on client needs and may employ multiple forms of expression with the same client.
Creative therapy has helped individuals deal with medical illness, relationships, emotional issues, grief, and such personal crises as lack of confidence, low self-esteem and loss of direction.
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is available at the Sheib Center in Yonkers. Psychotherapist Justine Pagano involves her Labrador Retriever, JoJo, in both individual and group therapy sessions, where the dog’s presence has encouraged reluctant participants to discuss their feelings, fears and concerns. JoJo is well-suited for this type of work because she is trained as a guide dog for people with visual disabilities. The genuine friendship and physical contact consumers experience with JoJo has been observed to elevate mood, increase functioning and encourage positive socialization and interaction with peers and staff.
