Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy enhances the daily living skills of people with developmental disabilities, enabling them to become more independent.

Westchester Arc’s licensed therapists visit individuals at their homes and job sites to develop personalized treatment plans. In many cases, occupational therapy has helped individuals improve their:

  • fine-motor abilities
    (bathing, dressing, self-medicating)

  • domestic skills
    (cooking, cleaning, money management)

  • memory retention

  • job performance

  • coordination, balance and visual perception

Therapy varies according to a person’s needs but may include physical activities—rolling a ball, buttoning a shirt, copying shapes and colors—and mental exercises, such as using flashcards or pictures to describe how a person is feeling. All sessions are non-invasive and confidential.

If needed, therapists will recommend adaptive equipment, such as an electric wheelchair or voice synthesizer, for additional support.
