Nutrition

Westchester Arc’s nutrition services help individuals with developmental disabilities improve their health and life expectancy. We work with patients to develop a personalized diet and exercise plan that help many people stay trim, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Combating Obesity

According to recent studies, 35 percent of Americans are obese. This is a particular concern among individuals with developmental disabilities, who may have difficulty managing stress or maintaining self-control, leading to binge eating. Inactive lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits may add to the problem. With the proper diet and exercise plan, however, a person can significantly reduce the risk of becoming overweight and obese.

At Westchester Arc, a state-certified dietician works with individuals to cut daily caloric intake and create a healthy, balanced meal plan to reduce the risk of obesity and related diseases. In addition, we recommend structured exercise programs, depending on a person’s physical abilities.

Specialized nutritional counseling is also available for individuals with diabetes, dysphasia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other special needs.

Overcoming Eating Disorders

Eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating, are another prevalent health issue among individuals with developmental disabilities. A person with an eating disorder may repeatedly avoid meals, hoard food, become withdrawn or isolated, dramatically lose weight and experience decreased concentration, memory and thinking ability.

As with most of its services, the clinic utilizes a “team-effort” to help someone overcome an eating disorder. The dietician works with psychiatrists, psychotherapists and social workers to assess the specific condition and map out proper treatment.

In many cases, this team approach has helped individuals at serious medical risk to improve their eating habits, increase self-esteem and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
