Residents Build
Community Relationships

Another beautiful day at Bedford Presbyterian.

Every week, four individuals living at Westchester Arc’s Bedford residence for women look forward to Sundays at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. The ladies have attended services—without fail—for over 25 years. As longtime members of the congregation, they have nourished their spirituality, formed lasting friendships and strengthened their bonds with the community at large.

The women first became involved with the church through their local housing advisory board, which helps them build relationships with their neighbors and feel more included. The board also contributes some of the “little extras,” such as furniture and exercise equipment, which help improve a person’s quality of life.

“Board members visited often and took a special interest in the ladies,” recalls Residence Manager Margaret Kohler. “Upon learning that they enjoyed praying before meals and at bedtime, a board member suggested they join her for Sunday services at Bedford Presbyterian. Spending time at the church has helped them feel like part of a community and that’s improved their self-confidence.”

Many years later, they have become model members of the congregation.

“They are always so happy to be here,” comments Midge Keane, a community volunteer who accompanies them to church. “When we sing, their voices are the loudest. When we pray, they are always so focused. The ladies bring great energy and enthusiasm to every service and constantly bring a smile to everyone’s faces. They will always have a special place within our congregation.”

Pastor Paul Alcorn has
developed a close relationship with the women. During services, he helps them follow hymns and recite prayers. He goes out of
his way to include them in extracurricular activities, including “coffee-hour” and holiday parties. And on their birthdays, he leads the congregation in singing “Happy Birthday.”

“I like going to church. Mrs. Keane and Paul are very nice. They help us,” notes Theresa M.

“Singing and coffee hour is
really fun,” adds Muriel T.
