WHITE PLAINS, NY—July 13, 2007—Ronald McDonald House Charities of the New York Tri-State Area (RMHC-NYTSA) has awarded $11,300 to Westchester Arc’s pre-school. The grant will be used to construct an indoor space for play activities designed to build sensory awareness and gross motor skills for youngsters with developmental disabilities. The space will be built at Little Friends Pre-School in Ossining, one of 12 community-based programs that collaborate with The Children’s School to offer inclusion classes, where children with disabilities learn alongside typically developing students, modeling their speech and behavior patterns. The benefit is two- way, with typically developing kids learning important life lessons concerning compassion, tolerance and the range of individual differences.
Westchester Arc is the largest agency in the county serving children and adults who have disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, mental retardation, cerebral palsy and learning delays. Based in Hawthorne, The Children’s School for Early Development provides innovative educational, social and support services to over 200 children with developmental disabilities.
Funding from the RMHC-NYTSA will be used to convert portions of a large, auditorium-style space into a “sensory awareness area” conducive to running, jumping, hopping and other physical activities that encourage children to build gross motor strength, strengthen muscle and improve coordination. The room will also contain colorful blocks, tumbler slides and other toys designed to stimulate their senses.
“We are so excited about all of the worthwhile programs we were able to fund this year,” comments Gerald McCoy, RMHC President of the New York Tri-State Area. “It’s wonderful to partner with not-for-profit organizations working to better the community and support programs that benefit children.”
