Dear Governor Paterson:

Cutting services to people with developmental disabilities can have disastrous consequences:

  • Family members waiting for the State to
pick up services will be forced to leave their jobs to stay home and care for loved ones.

  • Not-for-profits in our industry are major employers. Low-paid, direct care workers who lose jobs will swell unemployment and Medicaid rolls.

  • The OMRDD Medicaid financed service system means that for every $0.39 saved by the State, $0.61 is lost in federal matching funds.

  • Our nationally recognized service system, built on a commitment to families and people with developmental disabilities over the last 35 years, the commitment that we would never go back to the inhumane treatment of the past, will begin to unravel.

We implore you to consider the grave consequences of this “cost saving” plan before you take action!
