Can on-line social networking assist you and your family?

Aug 3, 2009 by Richard P. Swierat | 4 comments

Westchester Arc has learned of a new secure on-line social networking service called Parlerai for families with special needs. Do you feel social networking would assist your family, friends and caregivers to collaborate more effectively?

I all ready use social networking to assist me with special needs. I use Facebook and LinkedIn, which have provided me with many contacts, and answers to many questions. Another one that I don't use as often as I should is FroggyRock.

I particularly like the idea of having this service grow with the needs and growth of each child. Social networking has improved in recent years, but many of the collaborative efforts towards networking have been based on very specific disabilities.. (ie: a network for autism, another for cp; another for epilepsy..etc) The ability to discuss special needs with families struggling with different challenges sounds refreshing, helpful and comforting.. thank you!!

Parlerai is a fantastic tool for parents to connect all of the people in their special needs child's life. I am currently working to build my network inviting my daughters teachers, therapists, family and friends. I, as the parent have complete control over who sees what information and I also love that I can trust that my information is completely safe in this secure web based service.

I can't wait to get a scanner and put even more information in Parlerai so help with the never ending paper train of IEP, Medical records in my book shelf of binders.. :)

Parlerai has just added Text To Speech capabability to its service with BrowseAloud. The free download is available at http://www.browsealoud.com/page.asp?pg_id=80096
