How can presidential candidates assist people with developmental disabilities?

Nov 12, 2007 by Ric Swierat | 4 comments

What issues related to people with disabilities do you hope to hear about from the presidential candidates of both parties during the coming months? How could the candidates positively affect the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities?

More, ever more, funds.

Will the candidates support the federal provisions that currently allow medicaid to fund "habiliitation"services. Medicaid is the largest funding source for many of the services for people with developmental disabilities such as day, residential, and vocational services, as well as service coordination.

I will be looking for assurances that candidates value the contributions of direct care workers and would support increased wages for them.

I would like to see federal legislation which requires all states to have a special needs trust statute so that there can be clear guidance to all on how to structure these trusts, regardless of where the child with special needs lives. Currently, there is too much room for state and local interpretations which leads to varying results.
