Direct Care Professional

Rosemary Browne

It was the second day of the school year this September, and Rosemary Browne was making sure that the eight children in her class were having fun and feeling secure. Here she is, pictured with Ryan and Marco, who are looking delighted with the new school year.

Rosemary began her career with a Master’s in art education and taught art in elementary school. Working with kids on the autism spectrum, she began to realize her true calling and she decided to go for certification in special education.

This is her fourth year, working in this classroom in Hawthorne, where youngsters, most of whom are on the autism spectrum, are learning a range of skills—communication and social skills, language, daily living and fine motor skills. “It’s like a puzzle,” she says, “getting a unique glimpse of children and their families, helping them learn the wide range of skills they will need later on in life.”

Rosemary wants to emphasize how much she relies on the rest of the staff in her classroom: her assistant and two aides, as well as the speech therapist, occupational therapist and physical therapist. She says, “We really work as a great team.”

She says, “One thing I love about working with preschoolers, as opposed to older children, is that they grow and change so much over the school year and it is so gratifying to see their great progress.”

Rosemary is half-way through post-graduate coursework to qualify to take a test to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Her decision to pursue this certification came out of a desire to learn the best ways to work with children on the autism spectrum. She hopes to take the test in about a year and a half.

Arc of Westchester, through its Children’s School for Early Development, is proud to count Rosemary Browne among its dedicated, professional staff.
