“Tom is so deserving of this award, he has been with the organization for over 30 years and has always been there for us, supporting our events and our children,” commented Lucy Egan, president of the Yonkers League.
Guests included members of the Hughes family along with friends, co-workers and board members. NYSARC President Katharine Wilson Conroy praised Tom’s accomplishments, while reminsicing on her personal relationship with his family over the years. Westchester Arc Executive Director Ric Swierat thanked Tom for his “expert professionalism and generous spirit that has changed our lives, as well as those we serve.”
Tom first came to Westchester Arc in 1977 as a direct care worker in agency-run group homes in White Plains and Yonkers. He soon became residential director and was then promoted to associate executive director of the agency. In this role, he provides guidance and supervision to all agency services, as well as the human resources and finance departments.
"I continue to be inspired by the belief of the entire Westchester Arc family in the enormous potential and courage of each consumer as they pursue their personal dream," Tom explains.
Additionally, Tom has sat on numerous advisory committees on the state and local levels and is currently president of the board of directors of the National APSE (Association for Persons in Supported Employment) Foundation.

Many of Tom's colleagues and friends cheered him on at the event held at Westchester Manor in Hasting-on-Hudson.
“This is by far the largest turnout we have had,” noted Laura Scolaro, vice-president of the Yonkers League. “We just may honor Tom Hughes every year from now on.”
The Yonkers League, established in 1964, is a volunteer arm of Westchester Arc that supports services for individuals in southern Westchester.
