A New Young Adult Learning Center

Open House at Sheib Center in Yonkers

The month of September is a time for school books, back to school nights and new beginnings for students. Arc of Westchester in Yonkers was excited to share with families in the community some of the renovations that have been made over the summer for individuals attending our facility. Several of the walls now display activity posters and beautiful artwork created by individuals participating in our art programs. Thanks to a donation from the Yonkers League, these new improvements were made to the reception area and the learning center classrooms.

Tim Synan, program director of day habilitation services at the Sheib Center, welcomed guests and explained how this new space and new technology assists teens and young adults with skills that will lead to adult life and employment.
This classroom is equipped with a state-of-the-art smart board that enhances the learning experience. "The smart board has improved the concentration and enthusiasm of the students in the class. This technology encourages class participation which leads to teamwork and self-confidence," says Tim Synan, program director of day habilitation services.
Darryl Morris and Itasha Ross gave a smart board demonstration to the group. They also showed a video of a typical day in class and a music video created by the students in their program.

Members of the group enjoyed hands-on experience with the new technology.

Another room at the center has been designed for socialization and recreation. A cafe-booth, retro designed walls and lighting, computer stations and a Wii entertainment system, provide individuals with a fun place to learn and interact with their friends.
Tim Synan thanked Lucy Egan and all the members of the Yonkers League for their ongoing support for many projects over the years. Ann Manzi, longtime supporter, and Anne Sweazey, Arc of Westchester Foundation executive director, were pleased with the improvements.
Elaine Masket, Arc of Westchester Foundation board member, stood beside artwork that was created by her son, Alex. We are grateful to Alex and the Masket family for their donation of this large mural that adds color and conversation to the room. The students just love it!
