2009 Art Show Awards

Celebrating Creative Accomplishments of
People with Disabilities

The theme for this year's submissions was “Awakening”... new beginnings... finding your voice...understanding of self...the change of seasons. A panel of expert judges awarded top honors in four categories. The award-winning artwork is among many other beautiful pieces at Westchester Arc's gallery265.  Awards were presented to the individuals below at the agency's annual meeting. Congratulations to everyone!


Still Life/Portrait Category

First Prize
Artist: Maureen
This painting is called Designer Fish. The colorful tropical fish inspired me to invent my own new fish species.

Second Prize
Artist: Stuart
This piece of art is called A Couple of Pears. Stuart explained that fruit comes from the natural process of planting a seed, having a flower bloom which then bears the fruit. The painting has many layers of colors and reminds the artist of the warm season to come.

Third Prize
Artist: Jay
This painting is called Metamorphosis. Rehabilitation is like Metamorphosis; change come in stages.

 

Abstract/Impressionists Category

First Prize
Artist: Howard
This painting is called Mighty Tree.
This is a gentleman of strong inner feeling and emotions. The bold deep colors of “Mighty Tree” are some way are a reflection of his strong, stoic personality
Second Prize
Artist: Susan
This painting is called Faces in the Crowd. I love the fact that we are all so different, that is what I base my art on.
Third Prize
Artist: Raul
This painting is called
Multi-Dimensional. I am always enlightened by color and design that create an optical effect.
It’s just exciting.

 

Photography Category

First Prize

This photo is called Baby. Bobby had an interest in photographing animals. He sat with his instructor on the edge of a pond and captured his picture of swan.
Second Prize
Artist: Susan
This is a photo of flowers in blossom after the rain.

 

Mixed Media/Fabric Category

First Prize
Artist: Cathy
This painting is named Stitched Appliqué. This was made out of yarn, textiles and dried flowers were woven into this tapestry to create a rich mix of color and texture. The fibers inspired the artist to create dimension pockets that are almost sculptured in nature.

Second Prize
Artist: James
This artwork is called Blue P. This is a stitched tapestry is reminiscent of the graphic “Cool Jazz” albums of Miles Davis.
Third Prize
Artist: Cecilio
This painting is called Clowns. Cecilio envisions a world of might colors that mysteriously combine in sometime mischievous ways. That sense of playfulness is exhibited in Cecilio’s stitched tapestry.
