Over 150 people attended guardianship’s annual holiday party, held at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown on December 4. After dinner, guardianship participants received personalized gifts, danced to popular music and sang holiday songs.
“I feel like a king tonight,” said Donald Carter.
Sandra Rosario, a former Westchester Arc guardianship advocate, received the 2006 Nat Mills Award for demonstrating exceptional advocacy on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities. During her six years at the agency, Sandra went to great lengths to establish family-like relationships with those she served, going so far as to invite one individual to spend Thanksgiving at her home.
“It’s so nice to see everyone again,” commented Sandra. “It’s like coming home for the holidays.”
As the local chapter of NYSARC, Westchester Arc serves as legal guardian to 44 adults with developmental disabilities. The agency also provides educational and technical assistance to family members and others who are interested in becoming guardian to an individual with developmental disabilities who has reached the age of 18 and is unable to make major personal decisions.
Staff is committed to 24-hour, person-centered support and assists individuals with all aspects of their lives, from establishing a home to sharing in birthday parties. Unlike other agency programs, however, guardianship is completely dependent on private donations.
“The holiday party, one of the agency’s most anticipated events, captures the essence of our guardianship services,” adds advocate Roberta Nickelsen. “We do more than fulfill the wishes of those we serve, we celebrate them.”
