State of the Agency Address: Advocacy and Social Change

“The history of our agency and the core beliefs we hold focus on the way we can shape the world around us to be more accepting,” declared President Anne Majsak. She and Executive Director Ric Swierat proceeded to highlight agency accomplishments that have contributed to “Advocacy and Social Change,” theme of the June 12 annual meeting.

“Our pre-school is a national model, serving over 152 students, 93% of whom receive their schooling in inclusionary settings,” Anne began. “

This year, we also opened our first self-contained classroom in an integrated setting, bringing our community classrooms into 11 locations throughout the county.”

Ric then reported that over the past few years, community services staff have begun helping parents with cognitive delays to rear their children more effectively. In many cases, the support group has kept families together.”

This year, our career services program placed over 70 graduating high school students in community jobs. Our clinic now provides these supports onsite at jobs or in a person’s residence to ensure that their daily employment opportunities are successful. Nearly three-quarters of our clinical services are now provided at community job sites or at home.

“Gateway to the Community”

Ric stressed construction progress on Westchester Arc’s Gateway to the Community, the agency’s new resource center in Hawthorne, indicating that by end of July, concrete flooring will be poured, window frames will be installed and the roof will be in place.

“At the end of fiscal year 2006, the capital campaign was more than halfway towards its goal of 7.5 million,” he reported. The campaign goal includes $5 million for the building and another $2.5 million for a Fund for the Future that will ensure stability for programs that are insufficiently funded through public means.

Special events such as the MBIA Golf and Tennis Tournament, A Matter of Taste 3, Golfing for Kids and Bresnan Bike Tour, raised over $656,000 last year for the agency’s ongoing needs.
