Chinika T., customer service council president, hands Ric Swierat, Westchester Arc executive director, her initial donation to the agency’s capital campaign. “They’ll be more where that came from,” she says.
With “Coins for Westchester Arc,” self-advocates have begun making their first financial contributions to the agency’s $7.5-million-dollar capital campaign. The campaign will help pay for the agency’s new Gateway to the Community in Hawthorne and will safeguard services that receive inadequate financing from the government.
“Coins for Westchester Arc” is a strictly voluntary effort through which self-advocates donate their spare change. Participants may also ask family members or close friends to contribute coins, but they will not be soliciting funds within the community. “Coins for Westchester Arc” was conceived by the customer service council, a board-level group of self-advocates that directly affects the agency’s plans and operations. The group discussed various ways to participate in the agency’s first capital campaign and voted on this approach.
“Westchester Arc has helped a lot of us get jobs, get out in the community and live a better life,” explains council president Chinika T., “so we wanted to help this agency raise money for a better building. Everyone should do their part because the new building is for all of us.”
Volunteer Jason K. is happy to be involved with the capital campaign. “I really like fundraising,” he says. “I think ‘Coins for Westchester Arc’ is a good idea because it shows that people with [developmental] disabilities are capable of contributing money just like everyone else.”
Anne Sweazey, director of the Westchester Arc Foundation, echoes Jason’s sentiments. “We are honored to have self-advocates join the capital campaign. They’re wonderfully enthusiastic and committed. Each donor who wishes to be recognized will be listed by name on the recognition wall that will be installed in the new building.”
