All of Westchester Arc’s services will continue. Consumers and their families can continue to learn about the entire spectrum of Westchester Arc services and programs in the new building. Since most programs take place in the community, the building will serve as a “home base” or “county headquarters” for Westchester Arc’s program management and oversight, consumer and family information, and individual planning services. No services will be eliminated.
Further, we are pleased that in keeping with our promise to facilitate the integration of services within our community, the two large group programs (the workshop and day habilitation) will move from our obsolete building to appropriate and desirable locations in the community.
The new building will have the spatial flexibility to adapt to the needs of the organization and its various constituencies. The design will be open for maximum efficiency in the use of space. The structural system will allow a full range of spaces—large, open meeting rooms for gatherings of up to 100 people, as well as smaller spaces for counseling and private conversations. A new orientation theater will inform consumers and families about the full range of Westchester Arc’s services.
In addition, the building will offer a full range of informational and staff resources to enable consumers and their families to develop life plans. Some representative resources include The Charles R. Kingsley Life Planning Center, the guardianship office and the S.T.A.R. transitional program for teens looking for their first job. Finally, to underscore our support and our theme, Envision Possibilities, the achievements of consumers will be showcased in the new building to encourage, to provide demonstrated success and to share our hope for consumers and their families.
Government funding enables Westchester Arc to deliver specific services and programs. Government funds are not available to help us improve the environment and space in keeping with the needs of our consumers today. We recognize that we are in a situation where we need to reach out and raise the funding ourselves and through those who benefit from, understand and/or support our mission.
Westchester Arc, for more than 55 years, has been the leader in creating and delivering person-centered services. Programs that deliver services one person at a time based on unique abilities and choices are more costly than standardized programs aimed at large groups. There are innovative programs that Westchester Arc offers, such as guardianship, that receive no government funding whatsoever. Furthermore, there are no guarantees that government funds will continue at their present rate. It is our responsibility to ensure that programs are protected and continue regardless of future government cutbacks.
